Technology has broadened my ability to access a variety of resources for gaining information, as well as allowing me to communicate world-wide and collaborate on projects. In a face-to-face classroom, I often struggle to listen to lectures or constantly take notes as instructors are teaching. Online learning environments have made accessing resources and setting goals for my learning more realistic. I have found myself to be more successful when I can work asynchronously in my courses, communicate with my peers through discussion boards to expand my thinking, and collaborate in learning communities through a variety of technology resources.
I believe that every child should be given the opportunity to learn. In order to help all students learn, educators must address individual needs and provide a variety of opportunities for learning. With the increasing integration of technology into classrooms, all educators should embrace the opportunity to learn how to use emerging tools and apply 21st century skills to teach students how to use technology effectively to understand content. Before students can use technology for their own research and learning, effective practices should be taught and modeled for students through instruction. Once students are motivated and have a foundation of 21st century skills and knowledge of Web 2.0 tools, instructors should serve as a guide for them in directing students towards appropriate resources and support their use of new technology tools.
The following research examines blending online learning environments and face to face classrooms.

Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteI have read several posts and the common thread is that students must be given the opportunity to learn, regardless of their circumstances. Our classrooms are becoming more and more diverse in ethnic backgrounds, social status, and learning abilities. differentiation is key to teaching and we must teach to the needs of our students. I was a recent graduate of face to face education before I started my distant education at Walden. I find that working online asynchronously is more beneficial to me. The discussion board and working collaboratively has given me new insight on so many different levels. I did not know what a blog or wiki was before I took courses here at Walden. I feel technological savvy because I can navigate blogs and wikis. I felt empowered that I could (zip) download a wiki into my eportfolio. I personally just clicked buttons and the computer did the rest. But, My wiki is embeded into my eportfolio and it felt good to be able to do it. I love the technological knowledge that I have gained from these courses. Thanks for the post!

Tiffany, I agree with you when you state the importance of teachers being to teach technology in such a matter than their students are successful in every endeavor. I also address that addressing each student's individual need is paramount.
DeleteAs an educator and learner, materials must be presented to me in a matter that is challenging, motivating, and effective.
Great post.
Tiffany-
ReplyDeleteI feel I have the same struggles in the face to face classrooms. I have a hard time sitting still and focusing for a long period of time. I feel the online courses allow me to take breaks and come back as I feel necessary.
I agree with your statement that we must teach the individual students. So many time I see colleagues frustrated when the have a student in their class that is not "typical". I enjoy sharing strategies that I use with my special education students and seeing the progress those teachers have with that student. I feel just as it is important to teach students it is also important to share our knowledge with our colleagues.
Great post!

Hi Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteTiffany
Technology continues to change the way we learn and communicate every day. Most schools, colleges and universities today have increased the type of technology available to students especially with online courses. The online degree and courses opportunities without attending face to face classes on campus are my main reason to continue my education. I have gained a tremendous degree of knowledge through online courses and have received my masters through online program.

Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! You made several statements within your post that convey the same ideas and beliefs I have developed since I began teaching. Incorporating online learning and technology is an effective means of adapting instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. Although it hasn't been too terribly long since I graduated from high school, classrooms have changed immensely in just ten years. I recall using very little technology and lessons were taught using a cookie cutter mold. Basically, my teachers assumed, one size fits all. Luckly over time, educators have adapted their pedagogy to meet the needs of today's learners. This is the most critical component I think teachers must accept as they prepare to enter the teaching practice. Teaching requires developing relationships with students in order to create a supportive learning environment.
I enjoyed your post,
~Laura
