Virtual Worlds Presentation

I created the following video as an introduction to a presentation on virtual worlds at an educational technology conference. My references can be found in Google Docs at https://docs.google.com/document/d/15tuLa74n7FKwmGSSl9wJmzVbudPVyeJrk-Kk2SdW4hA/edit?hl=en_US
Enjoy!!

  1. Tiffany;

I especially liked your narrative skills and personal focus on the variety of content, technology and passion for the influence that virtual worlds can have in educational environment.
I am not sure about the changing volume settings as the video progressed to different topics; this may be a recording issue; nonetheless, you did an excellent job of providing variety and brevity.

The part of the video that I felt was very successful was your review of best practices and references for same.

While watching your video, I wondered about using this technology to build skill-sets for autistic adults (my passion).

I have seen others be successful with video creation when they practice, practice, practice.:)

Thanks for a quality presentation; you seemed to enjoy the final output and I think you deserve an A+.

  2. TIffany,

Great work on your presentation. First and foremost, I liked your laid back presentation style and personal approach. I felt like I was actually watching you give a presentation in real time. You really covered your topic. I think you brought up interesting points about the avatars and the strengths of virtual world conversation versus an average online discussion board.

Technically, my only concern was the changing volume as you shifted from the different slides. Great use of the Second Life footage in the end.

  3. Hi Tiffany,
    I enjoyed our Skype conversations.:)
I especially liked the visual representation of the different virtual world websites. This part of the video was very successful. Especially the SecondLife videos. My school district has an island in SecondLife called Sleece island. The island is used as a training site and collaboration with other educators.

While watching your video, I wondered about the volume in different parts of your video. I used my daughters headphones with a mic attached to narrate my videos. On my computer, I thought I was too loud. :) Awesome video!!

  4. Hi Tiffany.

Love the topic. The content I could hear was thurough. The scroll technique was simple yet effective, but I could not hear it. The virtual video at the end was simply fabulous. All the people were hot and it made me wanna go there. lol.

I would have shot it with less head room at the top. My eyes kinda wondered to the top of your cabinet. The stills were a little blurry as well. Other than that, nice work. I am sold. :)

  5. I've heard a little here and there about virtual worlds for the past three years, but still hadn't been interested in experimenting with them, as I haven't really seen a purpose in my personal, professional, or academic life. However, I think that you did an excellent job explaining what virtual worlds are and the importance of them... I learned a lot of necessary information through your video presentation and feel differently about virtual words since viewing it. I don't really have any critiques; I think that you did a great job overall. The only issue that I have (one that everyone else has noted) is the differences in sound quality throughout... I had that same problem within my video and wasn't quite sure how to solve it. The video at the end was an excellent added feature and did a great job with driving your point home... It was a great concluder!!! Good job.

  6. Hi Tiffany,

I like the topic that you presented but I was a little disappointed with the volume for most of the presentation. The time was going and I was hoping to hear sound improvement but I picked up the idea of how virtual worlds worked nearing the end of the reel.
I especially liked the part that I read concerning technical/vocational training. I was not sure about how these virtual worlds could be transformed into formal educational for academic transformation in the K-12 setting.
I believe however, that your presentation have made an impact with your students with respect to application in the classroom as you have included students at work using virtual world software programs. A bit of revision on volume and time would set you perfect. In general your ideas were great and as a learning project I believe you have done well!

  7. Tiffany,

I enjoyed your video. Particularly engaging was your blend of video and still images. I have never really gotten into the virtual worlds. Though I have avatars in several, I have yet to find the personal benefit. A year ago or so I sat in on a webinar about virtual worlds. There is a wiki that you may be interested in. http://wowinschool.pbworks.com/w/page/5268731/FrontPage . The members of this group are exploring and implementing the use of World of Warcraft in their schools. It is certainly worth exploring. Over the last several months, I have dabbled in Second Life. How do you use virtual worlds to support your learning? Do businesses really support the use of virtual worlds in their work? I can perceive the use of Skyping over virtual avatars. I've always perceived virtual worlds like second life as a place to spend personal time rather than professional.

Thank you for all the research that you shared. I'll have to dabble in the virtual more!

  8. Hi Tiffany,
Honestly I knew very little about virtual worlds. I learnt more about virtual world from video. I especially liked the last part of your video where you have provided a demo of virtual world.
At some places the narration was very soft.
    Over all fantastic.

  9. Hey Tiffany! Really a great job on your video! I liked the visuals that you included for the virtual worlds- very cool! Since I really don't know anything about virutal worlds, your presentation was informational and visually appealing! I agree with Anwar that some of the audio was a little soft. My only comment for revision is to consider condensing the speaking at the very beginning.
